RUDOLPH, ABRAHAM M., M. DAVID KURLAND, PETER A. M. AULD AND MILTON EL PAUL. Effects of vasodilator d ugs on normal and serotonin-constricted pulmonary vessels of the dog. Am. J. Physiol. I g7(3) : 6 I 7-623. I gsg.---Previous studies of the action of vasodilator drugs on the pulmonary blood vessels have yielded inconclusive results. Studies on the effects of continuous infusion of vasodilator agents, first on normal pulmonary vessels, and then on serotonin-constricted pulmonary vessels, suggest that the response of the pulmonary vasculature is dependent on the degree of vasoconstrictor tone present. Consistent vasodilator responses to acetylcholine, histamine and adenosinetriphosphate were elicited when the pulmonary vessels were constricted by continuous infusion of serotonin. Pulmonary vasomotor responses to drugs occur in both the small pulmonary vessels and the large pulmonary veins.

VASODILATOR EFFECTS OF ACETYLCHOLINE IN AN EXPERIMEN TAL MODEL OF HEART FAILURE

The purpose of the work presented here was to investigate endotheliumdependent relaxations in the rabbit coronary ligation model of heart failure. We investigated endothelium-dependent relaxations at the level of larger vessels (thoracic aorta and vena cava left renal artery and left renal vein lateral saphenous artery and lateral saphenous vein and finally central ear artery and marginal e...

Differential reactivity in the pulmonary circulation.

A new method for relating regional intravascular resistance to pulmonary arterial, capillary, and venous pressure and volume was used to evaluate local differences of reactivity in the pulmonary blood vessels in the isolated lung lobe of the dog. Intravascular infusion of isoproterenol caused active dilatation of pulmonary arteries and veins. Capillary conductance (1/resistance) and volume incr...

Pulmonary arterial dilation by inhaled NO: arterial diameter, NO concentration relationship.

The objective of this study was to determine the nitric oxide (NO) concentration and vessel diameter dependence of the pulmonary arterial dilation induced by inhaled NO. Isolated dog lung lobes were situated between a microfocal X-ray source and X-ray detector and perfused with either blood or plasma. Boluses of radiopaque contrast medium were injected into the lobar artery under control condit...

The influence of tone upon responses of small and large vessels to serotonin.

In the dog foreleg, serotonin antagonizes extremes of vascular tone induced by neurogenic means. It produces net dilatation when the bed is constricted and net constriction when the bed is dilated. This bidirectional response derives ultimately from the facts that changes in nervous activity change calibers of small vessels without greatly altering calibers of large vessels, and that serotonin ...
